Doing Feminism / Sharing The World 2017
Commissioned by Women Art & Feminism in Australia Since 1970 or WAFA. An Australian Research Council Project,Led by Professor Anne Marsh. Documenting the historical legacy & ongoing critical relevance of feminism in contemporary Australian art. This is a piece I designed for “Doing Feminism / Sharing The World”.Their summer artist-in-residence program with a focus on collaborative, participatory public projects. The brief called for an A3 illustrated poster that would also serve as a pamphlet detailing their schedule over a three month period, including some map iconography.
Art direction pulled from 1970’s & 80’s feminist posters as well as riot girl zines from the 1990’s. So there was a specific request that the poster fold down into a square pamphlet rather than a rectangle. This took time to get right. For the illustration, WAFA wanted to showcase dialogue & community discourse amongst a diverse group in order to encourage a broad audience turn out. It was important for them that people of different races, ages & genders not just be present but be engaged. In line with that, I created my illustration to represent a crowd after a protest. Seated on the grass in a public park conversing amongst each other with their home made placards laid down beside them. The choice to arrange it in landscape rather than portrait allowed for more characters equalling more diversity & also meant no one character was the central focus. Encouraging the viewer to not only read the title of the event but look at take in all the characters.
